Britney Spears: My Son Drops the F-bomb!

When it comes to Britney Spears' 3-year-old son, Sean Preston, the only "potty" she's concerned about is his potty mouth.

The singer, who lost custody of Sean and Jayden James, 2, to ex Kevin Federline, following her two psychiatric hospitalizations earlier this year, tells Rolling Stone her former husband isn't the best influence on the boys either.

"They're staring to learn words like 'stupid,' and Preston says the F-word now sometimes," Spears says. "He doesn't get it from us. He must get it from his daddy. I say it, but not around my kids."

Under the conservatorship of her father, Jamie, Spears is now allowed two visits and one overnight per week with her sons, whom she says resemble her. With her increased visitation rights, Spears is focusing more on motherhood these days, claiming her late-night, early-morning Bacchanalian ways are behind her.

"I feel like an old person now," she says. "I do! I go to bed at, like, 9:30 every night, and I don't go out or anything."

The singer's new album, Circus, hits stores Dec. 2, her 27th birthday.

Britney Spears Flies To Germany — EXCLUSIVE

Britney Spears will fly to Germany on Monday for a mini-tour before her new album Circus is officially released, Para Todos magazine exclusively reveals to JustJared.com.

Britney’s upcoming MTV documentary, Britney: For the Record, premieres next Sunday, Nov. 30 @ 10PM ET/PT.

She shares that she married Kevin Federline for the wrong reasons: “Your music is a reflection of what you’re going through. It’s such a part of me, the record, because of what I’ve gone through. I think I married for the wrong reasons. Instead of following my heart and doing what made me really happy, I just did it for the sake of the idea of everything.”

Britney Spears cancels Madonna duet

Singer wants to spend Thanksgiving holiday with her sons
Britney Spears has pulled out of a planned gig with Madonna so she can be with her boys.

‘She had agreed to perform in Miami but her circumstances have changed over the past couple of months,’ a source tells The Sun.

Britney Spears Reveals Album Cover and Tracklist

Britney Spears has revealed the cover of upcoming album Circus via her official website. Predictably, the album art has a Barnum and Bailey vibe, with Spears posing as rare sideshow attraction "The Airbrushed Lady." Personally, we're a little surprised that Spears didn't take advantage of the circus theme to showcase her usual freak tendencies, but perhaps she's leaving that for the music.

Spears has also unveiled the tracklisting, which includes such titles as "Lace and Leather," "Unusual You," and "Kill the Lights." You can find the full tracklist below.

And, as good news for those of us who've heard the word "Womanizer" sung about ten zillion times too many, Spears' new single will be the reportedly "up-tempo" title track, "Circus."

Circus hits stores Dec. 2.

Full tracklist:

1. Womanizer

2. Circus

3. Out From Under

4. Kill The Lights

5. Shattered Glass

6. If U Seek Amy

7. Unusual You

8. Blur

9. Mmm Papi

10. Mannequin

11. Lace and Leather

12. My Baby

Bonus Track:

13. Radar

Lynne Spears Helps Britney Bring Up Babies

Lynne Spears recently stepped in to help daughter Britney Spears tend to her two sons Sean Preston and Jayden James. This sounds like a good idea to us. Something tells us that Britney Spears can use all of the extra help that she can get. Also Lynne Spears has obviously been through her share of trials and tribulations with her own children, so shebrings a certain amount of “What not to do” advice to the table as well.

Taking full advantage of Britney Spears’ new overnight visitation rights, (the singer recently enjoyed a court victory which increased her time with her children whom ex-husband Kevin Federline has primary custody of), Lynn Spears spent the night on Saturday withBritney Spears and the two young boys, at Britney Spears’ home in Studio City. Nothing like a multi-generational Spears slumber party to liven up a weekend!

But momma Lynne wasn’t only in town for the pajama party. Lynne Spears had arrived earlier in the week, and also got in some mother/daughter bonding time alone withBri tney Spears. The two went shopping at the True Religion warehouse and even hit up a Pottery Barn. On Friday, they enjoyed dinner with two ofBritney Spears’ friends.

An observer of Britney Spears’ dinner date with mom spoke with People magazine. The source told the mag, "Britney walked in with a big smile and introduced her mom to the staff. She looked gorgeous, and I have never seen her in a better mood. She was laughing the whole time she was here.Britney seemed to have the best time hanging out with her mom and friends."

This week sounds too shockingly relaxing, low-key, and dare we say it…normal, to involve Britney Spears. It’s actually beginning to look like this whole new “getting her life back on track” thing that Britney has been trying out, might actually stick.

News Bites: Britney Spears Won't Be Performing on Madonna Tour; Lindsay Lohan Gets New Ring

Tuesday! And it's actually been quite a good news day today -- so we've all been extremely busy! Anyway, a round-up of some of our favorite stories of the day, below. Madonna Producers Deny Britney Spears' Live Stage Performance On Tour Madonna's tour producers have shot down reports Britney Spears will join her in a live stage performance. It had previously been reported the Material Girl singer asked Spears to join her on her Sticky + Sweet tour earlier this month in a bid to help the troubled star resurrect her own singing career. But while Spears will appear with Madonna in a short video that will be broadcast on big screens during the show, she will not be taking to the stage with the pop superstar.

Lindsay Lohan Gets $22k Ring From Samantha Ronson
Lindsay Lohan's rumored girlfriend, DJ Samantha Ronson, reportedly bought the Mean Girls star a $22k Cartier diamond ring for her 22nd birthday. "Sam took Lindsay shopping to celebrate her 22nd birthday," a source says. "Although Lindsay is the major breadwinner, Sam has her own money and is very proud. It's not an engagement ring - simply a token of her commitment. Lindsay is thrilled and she and Sam are very content."

Mark Ronson Lashes Out At The NME

Super-producer Mark Ronson has blasted British music magazine NME in a row over his recent Glastonbury performance - labeling the people who work there "morons". Ronson was infuriated after he received an email from a reporter at the publication denying responsibility for a scathing review of his set at the legendary English festival on 29 June (08).

And the music-maker, who was only alerted to the negative article by the message, is shocked at the magazine's attitude. He has posted the reporter's email on his website and is now vowing to sell his recent NME award on the internet. He writes on his Myspace.com blog, "I got the following email from a journalist at the NME in reference to what I imagine was a scathing review of my Glasto performance (if only I read the mag, I might know what it said....oh well). My NME award for 2008's best international solo artist will be on eBay as soon as the morons send it to me. I doubt the bidding will go that high and it makes an excellent doorstop."

Britney Spears House Hunting

Britney Spears is looking to move to a quieter neighborhood with a bigger backyard, court records confirmed on Monday (June 30th). Earlier this month, Los Angeles Court Commissioner Goetz also okayed a request from the conservatorship for permission to put Britney's Hollywood Hills home on the market. Documents released on Monday show that Spears is in the market for a "less-trafficked" home with more recreation area for her two sons.

It was previously reported that Spears was eyeing property in suburban Encino.
Spears bought her current home in December 2007 for $6.7 million. The 7,400-square-foot Mediterranean-style villa has five bedrooms and six and a half bathrooms. It also features a library, pool, hot tub, media room and maid's quarters.

Britney Spears, chaos at LAX.

Britney was gone and as out of sight, out of paparrazi sight as she could manage to be, but boy did she ever come back in style. When she arrived back at LAX, the paparrazi were waiting like heroin addicts lined up outside of a methadone clinic before it opens. Everyone needed a fix. And tempers flared.

US Magazine says, “Britney's security was not equipped to handle the situation,” an eyewitness told Usmagazine.com. “It was mass chaos with photographers standing on the escalator with Britney and she literally had nowhere to go. Her bodyguards had no idea what to do.”

There were no real winners in this. Well, except blogs like mine and the people that got to watch the mayhem. Ahh the weirdness and randomness that isBritney Spears.

Spears paparazzo blamed for having foot run over

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A paparazzo who pressed charges against Britney Spears after her car allegedly ran over his foot was himself to blame for any injury it may have caused, prosecutors said in refusing to pursue the case. After reviewing police records and a videotape of the incident last year, Deputy District Attorney Joseph D. Shidler wrote Friday that the "only way the victim's foot could have been where the video indicates it to be was by the victim placing it in that location."

The photographer, who was not identified in the report, filed a criminal complaint against Spears in early May, nearly six months after the alleged incident. A copy of the police complaint was not immediately available Monday, but it sought a felony charge of failing to stop after an accident involving an injury.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley's office reviewed a videotape and photos of the incident, which don't show the photographer being hit. The report also describes a chaotic scene surrounding Spears, with photographers on all sides of her car and "a lot of noise and confusion." The report describes Spears' as "driving at an extremely slow rate of speed and in a straight path."

The 26-year-old pop star has had her share of trouble behind the wheel, including a highly publicized incident in 2006 where she was photographed driving with her son on her lap.
A misdemeanor hit-and-run charge stemming from a 2007 parking lot crash was dismissed after she settled with the car's owner. In October, she pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor charge of driving without a valid license, and earlier this year was involved in a minor fender-bender on a Los Angeles freeway. Also Monday, documents were released detailing a request from Spears' father for payments relating to his conservatorship arrangement.

The document filed on behalf of James Spears seeks an undisclosed amount of money for helping his daughter shop for groceries, handle custody issues with her husband, Kevin Federline, and visiting her in the hospital in February and March. The filing also states that he held meetings to shore up security at Spears' homes and occasionally cooked meals.

Britney gets sun and rest in Costa Rica beach

SAN JOSE (AFP) — A bikini-clad Britney Spears got her picture taken this weekend while relaxing and soaking up the sun on a Costan Rican beach where she was reportedly staying at actor Mel Gibson's property. "She did it again," the La Nacion daily said Sunday in a play on Spears' 1999 chart-busting hit "Oops! ... I Did It Again." "At five minutes to midday (Saturday), the artist appeared on scene on an ATV (all terrain vehicle) driving from the home of Mel Gibson, who invited her to spend a few days in Costa Rica" at his 163-hectare (402-acre) spread in the Pacific coast resort town of Samara, the daily said.

The story included several photos of the troubled pop star on Barrigona beach, in a bikini and sunglasses.
Spears was in the company of her father, Jamie Spears -- who apparently told the paparazzi they could shoot all they wanted as long as they kept at a 50-meter (yard) distance -- and a young couple, the daily said. Gibson or his wife, Robyn Moore, were nowhere to be seen, it added. Spears, 26, appears happier since a Los Angeles court on May 6 gave her more visitation time with her two children, who are in the custody of her ex-husband Kevin Federline since the couple split in 2006, amid her spiraling personal problems and fears for her mental health.

Spears shot to superstardom in late 1998 with her smash-hit debut album "Baby One More Time," which she followed with another chart-topping success the following year, "Oops! ... I Did It Again."

Britney to get back with K-Fed?

Britney Spears has been growing closer to her ex-husband Kevin Federline and the former couple even shared a tender kiss, according to new reports. The exes, who begun dating in April 2004, have started seeing more of each other recently thanks to Britney's dad, Jamie Spears.

Britney even reportedly gave Kevin a kiss in front of their sons last month after he started to drop them off to her house for visits instead of using bodyguards to do it.
"Kevin was very upset throughout the ongoing court battle, and absolutely devastated when Britney was admitted to a psychiatric ward," a close friend of the couple's told Heat magazine.

"Since the appointment of Jamie as Britney's conservator, he's been acting as go-between, relaying Kevin's feelings of concern to Britney."
"Despite the ongoing custody battle, deep down Kevin knows sons Sean Preston and Jayden James are better off with two parents in a balanced relationship. That's something he wants to rekindle."

Jamie has become closer to Kevin since Britney was hospitalised in January and the pair have even been snapped playing golf.
Britney and Kevin have started secretly emailling and calling each other with the couple even spending a family day together over Easter. "It was initially planned as being just a day for Kevin, the two boys and their grandparents, but Britney heard about it and asked if she could come along," the source added.

"Kevin was all for it. They were evry civil and even loving towards one another; they hugged and talked at length while, Britney's parents Jamie and Lynn looked on."

Britney Spears’ Bodacious Body, Back Taxes

She’s living proof that working out and eating right can really pay off. And Britney Spears isn’t shy about showing off her new bikini body. The “Gimme More” singer was spotted looking amazing on Malibu beach recently, and she’s reportedly lost 20 pounds in the past 30 days.

And now for the bad news… it seems like only yesterday that Brit was ordered to pay legal fees totaling more than $400,000. But that’s just the beginning of her financial woes.
According to a new report, there are documents that claim Spears owes in excess of $23,000 in back taxes. It seems her brand-name companies owe the state of California from back in 2004. Making things worse, if she doesn’t pony up the dough, she’ll be charged interest and fees.

Will Britney Spears return to 'Mother'?

LOS ANGELES - An executive producer for "How I Met Your Mother" says he's open to having Britney Spears return for another cameo. "We always said, 'You know, if her character pops, we'll bring her back,'" Carter Bays told The Associated Press on Thursday. "I thought she was great. I was very proud of that episode." Spears, 26, garnered good reviews for her guest starring role as a goofy receptionist in the March 24 episode of the cult CBS sitcom. The show ended with Spears' character flirting with womanizer Barney (Neil Patrick Harris).

On the following episode, which aired Monday, the show introduced a "mystery woman" who's been sabotaging Barney's usually successful attempts to pick up ladies.
Asked if Spears might turn out to be the saboteur, Bays said: "Could be. There's no reason why not." He also suggested actress Sarah Chalke, who guest starred alongside Spears. Bays said it was surreal to see Spears on the set. "It was totally weird. ... I think we have a very, like, kind of Midwestern homey vibe here on the show, and it was strange to suddenly have helicopters circling," he said.

So will she or won't she come back?
"I don't know," he said. "I don't know the answer to that."

Britney Spears’ Visitation Almost Reinstated

She hasn’t seen her boys Jayden James and Sean Preston since the beginning of January when she was hauled off to the mental ward at Cedars-Sinai Hospital. But according Kevin Federline’s lawyer, Britney Spears will be reunited with her kids “soon, very soon.”

The “Gimme More” singer’s lawyers, along with Mark Vincent Kaplan (K-Fed’s attorney) spent hours hammering out a structured visitation arrangement this week.

Yesterday, Kaplan told press they were working out an agreement that would allow the Federline boys “participation of their mother in their lives.”

He added, “We’re pleased that ... the process of reinstating the children’s mother as a participant in their lives can commence.” We’ll keep you updated on the latest developments in this case.

Britney Spears is reportedly getting through her days focusing on clothes and housework.

Under the conservatorship put in place for her own well-being at the start of February, the star is currently barred from going to bars or nightclubs, hanging out with certain friends or driving around Los Angeles for hours on end and rare sightings have been limited to shopping trips with her mum Lynne Spears or meals out with her family at hand.

An inside source told OK magazine that Britney is spending much of the enforced downtime alone in her bedroom, which is “like a princess’ room with several walk-in closets and a spa tub, plus a long counter where she used to keep all her wigs.”

The source added that Britney likes to play with her extensive wardrobe, including a closet filled with “fat clothes” for when she’s feeling bloated: “She’ll change three or four times on days when she’s not leaving the house. Changing clothes all day long must seem harmless enough, so her dad doesn’t interfere with that.”
The source went on to claim that Britney is also keeping the Studio City property tidy: “Her life may seem out of control, but the inside of her house is very ordered. She’s very clean and has no clutter.”

But the star has a strange fascination with ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake: “She’s obsessed with him. She has pictures of them together and has devoted a private area just to celebrate him.”
But creepy shrine aside, her family are said to be happy with her progress over the last six weeks. A family source told Access Hollywood that Lynne and Jamie Spears know she still has a “long way to go” but are “hopeful for the first time in a long time."

Victoria Beckham: 'I Could Never Live Like Britney Spears'

Victoria Beckham has stated that she could never live a life like Britney Spears because the constant pressure of being snapped by paparazzi every day would make her go crazy. Speaking to Britain’s OK! magazine, the Spice Girl admits that she needs time alone with her husband David Beckham, and her three sons Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz away from the cameras.

She says: "I couldn't ever live a life like Britney Spears, who is under the spotlight every day. "I couldn't do that. I would go stir crazy. I need my privacy with my husband and children otherwise I'd just go loopy.”

Posh Spice also insists that her family life is quite ordinary and boring. She added: "When we read magazines and there are so many celebrities going out doing whatever they're doing and falling out of nightclubs.

“But David and I are quite boring. If people really knew the truth about us they wouldn't care." Is she deluding herself into thinking people already care?

Spears meets up with sons for third time

Britney Spears enjoyed her third visit in five days with her two young sons yesterday morning, it has emerged.

The 'Toxic' singer was reunited with Sean Preston, two, and Jayden James, one on Saturday, for the first time since she had her visitation rights revoked following a breakdown at her Beverly Hills home at the beginning of January.

Following a second meet-up with the kids on Monday, Spears and her boys spent more than three hours together on Thursday morning.

A car dropped Sean Preston and Jayden James off at their mother's mansion just before 9am, and the pair were picked up again at midday.

Recent reports had suggested Spears and her lawyers were hoping to get visitation rights up to three times a week.

The singer and her ex-husband Kevin Federline will be back in court for a custody hearing on April 9.

Britney's Shopping Day: Browsing, Not Buyin

Friday brought some relatively quiet time for Britney Spears, who spent the afternoon shopping in West Hollywood at the boutique of Monique Lhuillier – who designed Spears's wedding dresses – and the Fred Segal and the Betsey Johnson stores. At all three places she appeared to do more browsing than buying as the President's Day weekend was just beginning.

On the domestic front, her family is caring for the pop star. Father Jamie Spears has been granted a co-conservatorship over his daughter's affairs, while brother Bryan is acting a co-trustee of his sister's revocable trust.

(A Los Angeles County Superior Court commissioner placed Spears under a conservatorship at the beginning of this month. Such conservatorships are established when a court determines an individual cannot take care of herself or her affairs.)

Mother Lynne Spears, who departed Los Angeles earlier this week, had been part of the attempted healing process, spending rare quality time with her daughter – cooking for and shopping with her. In terms of the calendar, Saturday marks an unusual anniversary: It's exactly a year since the pop star turned heads by shaving hers.

Alexander - who was married to Brit for 55 hours in 2002 – claims that Britney accepts that she’s a crap mom and doesn’t want to take sons Sean Preston and Jayden James back full-time.

He tells U.S. magazine In Touch: "She wants to see them (kids), but she doesn't want to be a full-time mom. She said it doesn't matter if she doesn't get them back full-time, and that she can always have other kids later on."

The singer lost the right to visit her sons in Janaury following a stand-off with police and paramedics when she refused to return her boys to ex-husband Kevin Federline, who has full custody.

Alexander reveals he and his former childhood sweetheart renewed contact over the Christmas period:: "I got a phone call, a voice mail, that said, 'Hey! It's me. I know we haven't spoken in a while.' It was Britney.

"She said she'd call me back, and we've been speaking ever since."

Spears' parents fear for her life

LOS ANGELES - Britney Spears' parents said Wednesday they believe the pop star's life is at risk following her early release from a hospital psychiatric ward over the recommendation of her treating psychiatrist. In a joint statement given to The Associated Press by their attorney, Jamie and Lynne Spears said they were "extremely disappointed" to learn their daughter had been released. "As parents of an adult child in the throes of a mental health crisis, we were extremely disappointed this morning to learn that over the recommendation of her treating psychiatrist, our daughter Britney was released from the hospital that could best care for her and keep her safe," the statement said.

"We are deeply concerned about our daughter's safety and vulnerability and we believe her life is presently at risk. There are conservatorship orders in place created to protect our daughter that are being blatantly disregarded. We ask only that the court's orders be enforced so that a tragedy may be averted." After Spears' release, which came a week earlier than expected, she spent the day dodging paparazzi as she drove around Los Angeles in a black Mercedes-Benz with an unidentified man.

Paparazzi vehicles zoomed around the Mercedes and photographers surrounded the vehicle at each stop. More than 15 people circled the car at one point, shooting still photos and video. Spears' vehicle, however, was observing traffic laws, the helicopter pilot reported. At one point the Mercedes pulled into the Beverly Hills Hotel entrance. Beverly Hills police Sgt. Mark Miner said a "keep the peace" detail was sent to the hotel, a common practice when paparazzi are causing a nuisance.

Spears' release came after a series of legal developments in which her father fought for control of the pop star and her estate, her frequent companion was ordered to stay away from her, and her mother vividly described her daughter's fragile state, drug use and the strange behavior that led to her hospitalization. The troubled singer was hospitalized Jan. 31 and held for a 72-hour evaluation that was originally set to expire Sunday. Her stay was then extended for two weeks, a person close to the pop star told The Associated Press.

The expectation that she would remain hospitalized may explain how she avoided paparazzi on her way out. Until Feb. 14, Spears remains under the conservatorship of her father, an arrangement created when a judge determines a person can no longer care for herself or her personal affairs. James Spears was named her conservator Monday, and he and attorney Andrew Wallet were made co-conservators of the estate. As her conservator, Spears' father has been granted access to all of her medical records and authority to determine where Spears lives and who she sees.

Spears, who is in a child custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline, was also briefly hospitalized earlier in January after police were called to her home when she refused to return her sons to a Federline bodyguard after a visit. That trip to the hospital occurred amid a swarm of paparazzi. Spears has since lost all visitation rights to her sons, 1-year-old Jayden James and 2-year-old Sean Preston.

On Friday, a court issued a restraining order against Sam Lutfi, who's been at Spears' side in recent months after the singer's mother declared that he held her daughter hostage in her own home, drugged her, took over her finances and controlled the paparazzi. Lutfi was ordered to stay away from Spears, her homes and her parents' and siblings' homes. The singer has been in a spiral of increasingly bizarre behavior since November 2006, when she filed for divorce from Federline.

Good news at last for Britney Spears

After a week in which she was stretchered out of her home to an ambulance, held in hospital for tests and stripped of access rights to her children, Britney Spears has had at least one piece of good news.

Her new single is a hit in Britain. Languishing at number 46 last week, Piece of Me went to 19 in this week's singles chart.

Miss Spears is now understood to be at home in Los Angeles after being released from the city's Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre on Saturday.

She was taken there on Thursday night after police feared for her welfare after a stand-off inside the house over custody of her two young children.

The singer had limited access to Sean Preston, two, and Jayden James, one, because of her alcohol and drugs problems. She reportedly refused to hand over Jayden to her former husband and barricaded herself inside a room.

Although police initially believed she was intoxicated, there have been claims that she is suffering from bi-polar disorder, a form of depression.

A source close to the singer confirmed that Miss Spears's latest problems were not related to drink or drugs.
The singer reportedly left hospital through a tunnel to avoid photographers.

Doctors are understood to have decided on Saturday that she no longer posed a risk to herself.

Dr Phil McGraw, a television therapist, visited Miss Spears, 26, shortly before she was discharged and said he was "very concerned for her".

He told the television show Entertainment Tonight: "My meeting with Britney and some of her family members this morning in her room at Cedars leaves me convinced more than ever that she is in dire need of both medical and psychological intervention."

On Friday, Kevin Federline, her former husband, went to court and was granted "sole physical custody" of th e children until a decision on their future by the Superior Court of California on Jan 14.

Britney Spears Dumped by Lawyers…Again

Happy new year, Britney Spears!

The trainwreck's lawyers have quit. The firm of Trope and Trope filed legal papers on Wednesday, withdrawing themselves as Britney's representatives in her drawn-out bitter baby battle against Kevin Federline.

It seems like working with Britney is just too hard! Last year, Spear's previous lawyer, Laura Wasser, also quit.

In the Motion To Be Relieved as Counsel, Trope and Trope say, "there has been a breakdown in communications between [Britney] and Trope and Trope making further representation of her interests impossible."

[UPDATED: Britney finally showed up late to her depo and it is reported that her lawyers must stay with her until she fires them or she finds other representation. See more at the latest News posts.

For Celebrity Magazine, Pregnancy Is a Bonus

OK!, the celebrity magazine, could not possibly have purchased all the attention it enjoyed in late December after it got the scoop that Jamie Lynn Spears, the younger and until then less sensational sister of the troubled pop queen Britney Spears, was three months pregnant.

Or could it? It is widely assumed within the publishing industry that OK! paid the Spears family for the exclusive rights to the pregnancy news. US Weekly, another celebrity magazine, cited sources who said that Jamie Lynn’s mother, Lynne Spears, had sold the pregnancy story for $1 million, printing the assertion on the cover of last week’s issue.

Checkbook journalism is hardly a secret within the star-struck world of glossy magazines. The publications often pay for photos of weddings and babies, perhaps most famously in June 2006 when People won a fierce bidding war for the first photos of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s daughter, Shiloh.

Although People said that the widely reported $4.1 million price tag was not accurate, it did not offer an alternative figure; editors say that disclosing prices would work against efforts to keep costs down.

Purchasing news of a pregnancy, however, is unusual. The two-year-old American edition of OK!, like its 14-year-old British counterpart, has freely acknowledged paying for “relationships” with some celebrities, but Sarah Ivens, editor of the American edition, declined to discuss specific deals or dollar figures.

“If there’s something out there, there will be a bidding war,” Ms. Ivens said. “We’re not bidding against ourselves.”

When asked why she was less hesitant than some competitors to acknowledge the purchase of photos, Ms. Ivens said: “I’m not very good at lying.”

The interview with Jamie Lynn, 16, and her mother certainly drew copious attention to OK!, which sells far fewer copies than competitors like People and US Weekly, and provoked speculation about the relationship between OK! and the Spears family, which had been strained by a disastrous photo shoot with Britney six months ago.

But Ms. Ivens kept in touch with the Spears family — she said that she spoke regularly to its members — and said that when the family decided to announce Jamie Lynn’s pregnancy, it contacted OK! first. The six-page interview barely mentioned Britney.

Word of the 16-year-old star’s pregnancy — and of OK!’s exclusive on the story — seeped out on the Internet on Dec. 18. By the next day, when the magazine reached newsstands, the news was splashed across the cover of The New York Post, treated as the lead story on NBC’s “Today” show and publicized on the home page of People.com. In each case OK! was cited as breaking the story.

Tom Morrissy, publisher of the American version of OK!, promptly sent an e-mail message to prospective advertisers extolling all the coverage the story had received. The Jamie Lynn issue of OK! sold a record number of copies — nearly two million, roughly twice the usual number.

“What advertisers care about are buzz-worthy stories and volume,” Mr. Morrissy said. He said that OK!’s financial arrangements with celebrities had not factored into its conversations with advertisers.

Securing such scoops, whatever their cost, seems to be part of OK!’s growth strategy, as each exclusive article raises awareness of the brand. In 2007 the OK! publications, which are owned by Northern & Shell, a British media company, secured the first photos of Eva Longoria’s wedding and of Larry Birkhead and Anna Nicole Smith’s daughter, Dannielynn.

The magazine’s latest photo exclusive of the wedding of Katherine Heigl, a star of “Grey’s Anatomy,” was published this week.

Some celebrity-watchers have speculated that the Spears family would be paid not for the pregnancy news, but for the first photos of the mother and baby sometime next year. The spokeswoman for Jamie Lynn Spears and representatives for the Spears family did not return phone calls or e-mail messages, and Ms. Ivens would not clarify the matter.

To the outside world, OK! did not look like the logical choice for the Spears family to take the story. Back in July Britney Spears had agreed to sit for an OK! interview and cover shoot — pitched as a friendly “comeback” profile of the increasingly ridiculed entertainer — but had acted erratically, destroyed expensive dresses and abruptly walked out.

After news of the photo shoot leaked to gossip Web sites, the magazine decided to publish a three-page depiction of the day. The issue, headlined “Britney’s Meltdown,” sold 1.2 million copies, the magazine’s best performance at the time.

The text was still relatively delicate, concluding: “At OK! we’d love to have our old Britney back. But what we experienced was a young girl who is desperately in need of help.” Still, the article suggested that Ms. Ivens would start taking a harder line toward the celebrities it typically fawned over.

“We got tougher,” Ms. Ivens said. “But the truth is, everyone in the family came back to OK! We have a really good, trusting relationship with the Spears family, and the story didn’t change that.”
